Hello and welcome to The Alchemy of Color, my personal blog about the mystery, beauty and magic of color. My name is David Witt, and I am the creator of Interactive Color Creation, the colormixer interface, and the methods of RGB+CMY colormixing, and I’m here to share my love of color and unique perspective on working and playing with color, based on my experiences.
This channel is about color, interaction and experience Obviously, color is a huge subject and one that’s been well covered in traditional ways However, I have a unique perspective that I want to share with you.
Color impacts everything, but traditional methods leave a lot to be desired. There is a whole world of color waiting to be explored. I want to inspire you with some insights into my story and my work.
I’m a Human Machine Interface and User Experience designer with over 30 years of design experience, technical production, and fine arts practice. Working with color has been part of my practice since the beginning.
It was during my MFA studies at Parsons School of Design in New York that I took a big leap into color. I was dissatisfied with existing color tools, and I wanted to find a better, more intuitive way to work with color on the computer and understand color at its deepest levels, so I began an investigation into color in the parallel worlds of art + science. I desired to create a more fluid way for digital artists to work with color and develop methods closer to the way painters work with color.
Amazingly, I found an original way to tie it all together in a way that had never been discovered. It became the basis for colormixing and original color creation, which I have used professionally and in my own fine art practice in NYC and SF before I had to put it on the shelf for a few years in order to focus on my family and career.
Something happened to bring me back to color, I was laid off in a corporate hostile takeover, and so I started looking around for what to do next. When I took a look around, I realized that my color work was a hidden gem and no one has put it together like this. So I restarted my work, and this channel is part of my mission to bring color experience to the world.
There are many ways to look at color, its a fundamental aspect of the physical universe and human experience, and embedded in every culture throughout history. Color is everywhere, used for practical, symbolic and artistic means. It is an endless source of fascination and inspiration.
There are important things I want to cover from many different standpoints, but ultimately, the focus is on the experience of color, and the perceptual effects of the interaction of colors. Creative color is about working with color, or really, colors, to achieve sensorial and aesthetic effects.
Color has a power over all of us, and that is what I am interested in sharing with you here.
